Family Advent Devotionalish

December 1, 2016

I remember the first time my young family gathered in the living room to do our very first advent devotional. My wife had ordered the Fisher Price Nativity Set, and we had it all set up to go over with our one year old son the arrival of Jesus into our world. It started out sweet enough, but it didn’t take too long for the baby Jesus to get chunked across the living room. This is not how I had planned it to go in my mind.

Since that time my ideas and expectations of family devotionals have become more realistic, and I am excited to share with you what our family is planning for our advent devotionals. This time, instead of a one year old, we will have a ten year old, two seven year olds, and a sixteen year old Chinese exchange student.

Prepare Him Room, written by Marty Machowski, is a resource that keeps the focus of advent on the gospel. The book comes with three devotional readings for each of the four weeks that lead up to Christmas day. In addition to the readings, he includes craft ideas and songs to sing as a family, if you are so inclined to do so. The book concludes with a story about a person named Bartimeaus. I am really excited to find out about him!

Hopefully, this year baby Jesus will not be turned into an arrow, but rather we will be turned towards Him as we discover again the faithfulness of our God in providing us a King.
